I did a more in depth writeup over at Volleytalk I pasted below
LB took on Concordia a couple times today, I watched the afternoon game at the Pyramid. Beach took 4 out of 5 sets played, 19-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22
About 200 fans and family watching. Saw Nico Leitz hanging out in the stands during the first couple sets. All 18 guys on the roster warming up, only injury I can see is Kandev's left ribs and shoulder taped up and limited to cupcake serves but he did bomb away on some kills and played a lot of minutes, so probably something minor maybe something to do with his ribs? Daniil looks leaner may have trimmed down 15 lbs but added a fat stache.
The starting lineup for this scrimmage:
Setter: Pazanti
Opp: Daniil
OHs: Kandev, Binev
Middles: Braun, Cryst
Libero: Larson
First set Concordia seemed to play above their heads and emotional when they got the lead and Beach was flat. 2nd set Cryst had a big block and followed it with an ace and Beach took all the momentum the rest of the match.
Pazanti looked good, actual sets were acceptable got better as the timing got better especially with the middles. Doty and Peluso subbed in sparingly, so Jake got most the work. His athleticism is good, can jump high at the net and has long arms and good block timing. Might be a decent serving weapon. I'd like to see a scrimmage where both Doty and Peluso setted the majority to compare them better.
Binev did ok hitting at OH but excelled in the back row, good serve receive and excellent defense. Throw in he's a solid server, he should double his off the bench minutes. If Varga goes pro like has been rumored (I've heard it here and from an insider not a done deal just considering it) Binev may be the guy. Kandev didn't pound serves or 75% of his kill shots. Still had 3 aces and a bunch of doink kills he's so sneaky at the net.
Daniil started slow, got in a groove a few times, but the connection from Pazanti and set deception wasn't good so he got blocked some, and sometimes his approaches are predictable. Woj subbed in more and more as the match wore on, started shaky but quickly looked more comfortable and looks like he'll be a weapon and could edge Daniil for minutes at some point.
Larson was good as ever. Hillis came in the 5th set and played libero and showed some great d so he must be the libero backup this year.
Middles, Beach has a lot of options. Braun and Cryst started, Braun did his typical work but nothing special, Cryst looked legit once he got going in the 2nd set and fired up, he was blocking and serving well and got some kills. The timing to the middles sucked in set one, then got decent the rest of the match. Pruitt and Marquardt got time in the 4th and 5th sets, I love Pruitt and Marquardt was impressive.
Concordia served tough touching the BW level often enough to test the back row and they were pretty much nails just a few biffs. Very impressed with Binev.
Lots of time to sort out starters and key bench players, but I think I saw enough to get a feel. Most impressed by Pazanti, Woj, Cryst, Binev...Kandev is the star of the team no doubt. Vargas is a wild card, he was there but I don't think he warmed up much so it feels like his status is 50/50 but what do I know?
