He is getting more polished but needs time. He was barking a lot last night but it was a different vibe, trying to wake everyone up and pushing them to move more off ball on offense.
He made some good moves, I can't remember what right now but they were some subtle things. I think it had to do with drawing up a good play during a timeout and some sub patterns.
The guys still seem tentative at times and look to the sidelines rather than just doing what they are supposed to do, but maybe some of that is by design.
Sykes is Mr. Smooth Buckets, any bball player that gets his points efficiently and in the flow of the game is a positive, and if I hadn't been looking at the scoreboard and his point totals thru the game, and at the end asked how many he got, I'd say around 16. He got 23. They aren't always 'loud points' if that makes sense. He's got to be a nightmare for the opposition defensive planning, he can torch you from deep and has a really good dribble drive and feathery touch near the glass.
Bender's block was super important forgot to mention that before. He might be our X factor in BWC. I like his energy off the bench and he's physical at the guard something we've lacked and have much more of this year.
When the final buzzer sounded one of the lower assistants was acting like we just won the BWC championship like a big monkey just jumped off the teams back or something. It felt like that.
Like you said, I too have been enjoying watching this team even when they make bonehead decisions, lose close games, etc. They feel like a team that could grow a bunch more, clean up the edges, gain more confidence, etc. I hope we start winning regularly against similar competition, it would be a wonderful thing!

I have been one of his biggest critics since he was hired. But I'm starting to like what I see from his group, and the way he interacts with the players.
It's not a perfect product. But this team clearly is unselfish. They don't pout. They play really hard. And they're fun to watch, even if they've struggled to close out games. Getting Gavin Sykes is clearly a coup — kid is the best frosh in the conference.
I predict we'll be a .500 team in BW play, and give ourselves a shot in Henderson.
Perhaps my opinion shifts back. But the last month has been the first time I have felt this wasn't an epic dud of a hire.
