Back in the good old days LB St 49ers made it to what was then called the elite 8 in both 1971 and 1972. We missed out on the final 4 by losing to eventual champion UCLA. In 1971 it was a heartbreaking highly controversial loss 57-55 when we lead by 9 with 5 min to play when star Ed Ratleff fouled out as a result of some questionable calls.
Our best team was likely our 1974 team that went 24-2 that was put on 3 years probation just prior to the tournament selections.

Ca State Who?
Previous Message
Only 32 teams in the tourney back then.
"In 1978, the Fullerton men's basketball team, coached by Bobby Dye, made it to the Elite 8 in the 1978 NCAA Division I basketball tournament. They were considered the year's Cinderella story as a #7 seed (out of 8). The team defeated University of New Mexico at Tempe, AZ, and then defeated the University of San Francisco before losing to the University of Arkansas in regionals at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fullerton was led by Greg Bunch, a CSUF Hall of Famer."

Since when were these stats generated?
I'll guess that the two teams were UNLV and New Mexico State. If more recent (since the UNLV and NMSU departures), I'll say UOP and CSUN.
