The temporary AD's and extra administration at a time of the biggest upheaval in college sports history did not help. Jane reigned in the extra spending coming from Brotman as well.
Truthfully, no AD has been able to develop and execute a complex fundraising effort at all dollar levels for 30 years. I think there was momentum when King and Vic were on the same page. It seems the booster groups used to be more effective at having some autonomy for individual sports. I know there is a renewed effort with some very powerful local people now.
But the university, and the university system, have to be on board, as do the students. The victim mentality, manipulation and graft of government, and attack on the very system that is trying to provide them growth and opportunities makes it nearly impossible.
Detroit was the major metropolitan area for all things automotive, and it collapsed. California seems to be making similar self inflicted decisions that will break it. We need a leader who can overcome all the changes at a public institution, but Smitheran's extension may not have any effect at all. I'll support at D1, and will wait to see if the political actions going now give us and the NCAA a chance.

LBRob The problem is if Apel had the authority before Blanchard's legal start date there isn't much Blanchard can do about the contract extension. But Blanchard can take away Apels specific authority over Athletics. He can require Apel gets his ok before authorizing anything.
