he Athletic’s CJ Moore dives into the context surrounding Cal Poly Men’s Basketball student-athlete Hamad Mousa turning down upwards of $1.5M in the transfer portal to return to a program that had $500K to spend on its entire roster. Mousa cited not wanting to attend a third school in as many years, relationships with the staff and teammates and HC Mike DeGeorge’s up-tempo system that allows him to showcase his entire skill-set for the pros. For his part, DeGeorge emphasized transparency in his process that resulted in 13 of 14 student-athletes returning from last season, using “an NBA-like model by assigning value based on a combination of production, role in his system and what the market value would be to replace each particular player,” per Moore. DeGeorge also scoffs at the notion of players being labeled as selfish: “The market is what it is, and if they have market value, they have a right to explore that. They aren’t creating these rules. … They’re being capitalists, and that’s who we are as a country.” One final tidbit: DeGeorge asked Mousa to delay the announcement of his return in order to facilitate locking in buy games.
