John is 9 and has been on GSH for 4 ½ years and is doing great. In 4 years, John has had only 1 round of oral antibiotics (due to the flu that he caught last year). John’s FEV1 at his last checkup was 112% and his energy and stamina are remarkable. He has a good appetite and is growing quite well without the use of high calorie supplements. John does get a nasty cough from time to time, due to a cold or allergies, but he gets over it on his own. We both caught “the crud” last fall and he got over it before I did. I was still coughing long after he had stopped.

John’s only major CF issue is he can’t take exposure to smoke, strong scents, or fumes. Like the time this kid decided to spray TAG body spray into the air on the bus to make it “smell better”. John got a lung full before the bus got aired out and it really did a number on him. He started coughing that evening and coughed hard all night long. It was a miserable night, but John was better by noon the next day. When something like this happens, John usually gets over it within 24 hours. Before GSH, though, something like the TAG incident would have sent him into a downhill spiral that he could not have recovered from without antibiotics.
