Yes, you can look through the older posts and see several discussions of this very issue. Glutathione is used by all living organisms to protect themselves from oxidant damage. Thus, theoretically, GSH can be used by bacteria to help defend against the ROS production by antibiotics. BUT, we have always pointed out that normal people have significantly higher GSH levels than CF persons and clear bacteria much easier than CF persons. So the equation, GSH=greater bacterial resistance appears not to hold. And this very article shows this! They say that their study finds that GSH and GSSG (the oxidized form of GSH) inhibit the growth of PA (at least in vitro). That is super news, and vindicates what many of us have thought (and also what Dr. Visca found): if CF persons use GSH, it actually helps them fight PA better. In Dr. Visca's observational study, some CF persons with PA actually eradicated it while on GSH. Now, this doesn't always happen, and we have had folks who have been using GSH religiously and still pick up PA. But the evidence is increasing that a) they are not picking up PA because they are using GSH, and b) continuing to use the GSH will help them fight the PA. Thanks so much for sending this--it's great news! |
