I've just been looking into xylitol as an alternative to sugar - for reasons unrelated to CF. However, I came across several (non-scientific) websites which claim that xylitol "activates the glutathione antioxidant system". This claims seems to be based on one article: 'The potential use of xylitol in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency anemia' by Y. M. Wang, J. H. Patterson, and J. Van Eys, J Clin Invest. 1971 July; 50(7): 1421–1428. I unfortunately do not have the scientific background to make sense of this article. Can anybody tell me if it has any relevance to CF? Could xylitol have any potential benefits (or risks) for CF, as far GSH goes or otherwise? |
