2-3 times in my adult life, I have been told I am glucose intolerant and it will eventually be CFRD (CF related diabetes). However, each time my test came back with those results, I strictly watched what I ate and how each meal/snack balanced out sugars and carbs. I also drink only water during these times. Testing after these changes showed normal sugar levels.
Most recently, the glucose intolerance was giving me an increased cough. The doctor said that the excess sugar my body was not correctly processing can seep into the airways and it helps the bacteria thrive. The plan was IVs for me. After 3 days in watching my diet, my "weird" cough went back to baseline and I never had that round of IV!
My point is that in my case, diet (and exercise) has helped me avoid CFRD. I don't know how long this will work for me, but I will be 36 next month! Monitoring it annually is very important so that it can be caught early.
I should also mention that in my case, I am not on medications that seem to make sugar levels go crazy (like prednisone).
I hope that helps.
Denise
