Hi, Michael, thanks for asking. Our family has always gone with the notion that normal people have lots more GSH in their extracellular milieu and they are killing fungus and bacteria just fine. In other words, we feel the GSH is making their immune system more effective, and so the use of GSH while fighting fungus and bacteria makes sense to us. However, we know that there are quite a few people who feel that if you are to the point that you need an antibiotic or antifungal, then you need to give those medicines the chance to work their best. And they feel that they will work better if the yeast or bacteria does not have access to the GSH you are taking in. I respect that logic, even while I disagree with it. I wish I could tell you there were studies that would tell you which of these points of view are more accurate. To my knowledge, there are not. But there is one thing we do know--the use of so many antibiotics by CF folks does predispose them to culturing fungus. That is probably why you are seeing that "rare" yeast in the sputum right now . . . |
