No scout camp for you, buddy!

Well, our son's scout troop was going to go hike in the Grand Canyon this week. (This son is our oldest with CF.) It would have been our son's first more-than-overnight campout, lasting from Monday to Friday. But with temps in the 100s down there, we figured we should be safe and try him out hiking with our family first. So we went to a beautiful national park in the southern part of the state, with temps hovering quite near 100. The first day of hiking, he was fine. The second day he went out with his older brother and father on a bit more strenuous hike. By the time they got back down the canyon, he was vomiting incessantly, couldn't even keep liquids down, and his skin was white and cold to the touch. By the time they got him back to our tent, his legs started cramping and he couldn't walk. We took him straight to the emergency room where, 3 IV bags of electrolyte fluid later, he felt fine. We were very grateful to find out before the scout trip just how vulnerable he would be to heat stroke. So, kiddo, no week-long trip to the Grand Canyon for you!!!
