We initiated GSH after struggling with weight gain. At 9 months we were at about the 25% and falling fast. The CF clinic kept suggesting to increase enzymes. (up to 2 creon 5 with a bottle at 5 months) -- at about 6 months there was blood in the stool. The cause was finally attributed to the difficulty of digesting milk protein ( the CF clinic was also having us enhance breast milk with a milk-based booster) and enzymes activating in the wrong location in the GI. A non-CF GI Dr. told me that the enzymes were not designed for babies and since their transit time was different – the enzymes were not working as intended and instead “digesting” the GI later along the track My search for alternatives lead me to GSH. At 9 months we started Dr. B’s protocol with GSH caps. (Theranaturals.com) We did switch over to liposomal GSH (GSHnow.com) at about 12 months because liquid was so much easier to administer to a baby. We tested GSH levels at Amscot Lab in Cincinnati and watched the RBC level GSH rise right along with weight gain. We started slowly on the GSH Caps. By the time we switched to lipo GSH we were at about ¼ teaspoons of lipo GSH (about 110 mg. – this is completely different mg. level than what you use with capsules as liposomal is absorbed differently. We estimated at the time that about 100 mg. liposomal was the same as our Dr. B protocol amount of about 600mg. in capsule form. (for about 20 lbs). We tried ½ teaspoons of GSH and within a short time we were up to 65% weight. At this point GSH levels were in the middle of the normal range. We experienced a decrease in enzyme use (constipation came on quickly once starting GSH – so we began to reduce enzymes to keep things regular) Colds were no longer a big deal. And GSH is still helping with that – this year my child started pre-school and got and got over 8 head colds! (Our whole family uses GSH when sick. I also give to my 2 yr old (non-CF) weeks before and after immunizations. ) We added inhaled GSH ( GSH-Plus from Thereanaturals.com) at about 2 yrs. old because the sinuses were looking a bit inflamed. GSH has been incredible for us; and freeing up stressful weight-gain issues has allowed a completely healthy diet to compound health benefits. Our routine includes 1 teaspoon of liposomal GSH, 2 GSH Plus inhalations, 2 vest treatments daily, 2-3 creon 5 with meals, Urso and a whole list of nutritional supplements including probiotics (also CRITICALLY IMPORTANT). In case you are wondering (!) our CF clinic in California does not acknowledge our GSH use. I told them I use it. Even after the weight went from 25% to 60% they just didn’t respond! I had asked them about GSH prior to starting and they wouldn’t even speak about it but handed me a sheet from the CFF saying it hadn’t been FDA approved Blah, Blah, Blah…I think that for the Dr. it is a liability issue and for the CFF - sour grapes! Because they haven’t figured out a patentable GSH product. My clinic tells me that we are “lucky” and “blessed” !! – but won’t acknowledge my nutritional supplement (incl. GSH) use. I also use a Naturopath for supplement suggestions and highly recommend NDs. ( (naturopathic.org) For Diet -- I learned so much from Perricone Promise – it is an easy guide to anti-inflammatory foods. (Med. Diet is similar) I did speak with Dr. Bishop as I was trying to get comfortable with the idea of adding GSH. We also became a patient of Dr. Guilford - another GSH expert located in CA. GSH is indispensable for my CF child’s health.
