After reading the Woman's Day article in the spring of 2003, I asked our CF doc about glutathione and his response was laughter. So, I proceeded to investigate GSH on my own. Without the knowledge of our CF doc, my son John (age 7) has been using oral GSH for 2 years and inhaled GSH since May. Within two weeks of starting oral GSH, I saw improvements in appetite, energy level, and coloring. After 3 months of oral GSH, John’s FEV1% jumped from an average of 105 to an average of 124. Since he started inhaling GSH 3 months ago, his appetite has gone into overdrive and he has gained 3 pounds and grown ¾ of an inch. With 2 years of solid, phenomenal results behind us, I finally decided it was time to let the CF staff know we've been using GSH. Of course they were not very happy about it, which did not surprise me. But I was surprised and greatly disheartened when the nurse told me I was the first at our clinic to admit using it. I would hate to think my son is the only one in this area benefiting from GSH.
Despite the fabulous PFT scores and weight gain, the doctor said emphatically he does not want John to inhale the GSH and he wants us to stop immediately. "We don't know what the long term side effects are, blah, blah, blah...." The nurse even made a snide remark about burning all those Woman's Day magazines.
Does anybody else out there using GSH go to the clinic in Winston-Salem? I am not going to stop the inhaled GSH and I hope to convince them that GSH actually works. Maybe they will listen if there are more of us.
