Re: I was one of many rescuers.
Sonny Smithwick and I (Bill Jones) had worked in Eastern's Flight Dispatch Department that day. We were in a restaurant on the Palmetto Expressway when we heard the 401 news.We went to the levee and hitched a ride with the Dade County coroner to the crash site and spent the night and day until 7PM along with Eastern's VP Frank Sharpe registering each deceased and their belongings before passing them for helicopter transport. I recall that our wives only learned where we were all night when we were able to place calls via the communications vehicle at noon time. My wife had already screamed into towels many times so as not to upset the children. Sam Higgenbottham, Eastern's VP, arrived by helicopter and picked us up at sundown ending our day.
