USCG - rescue swimmer EAL-401

I was one of the rescue swimmers with the USCG in Miami. I got to the site about 2 hours after the accident at about 0330 local. One thing I recall, that took me years to resolve, was the way that was used to scare any alligators in the area. Shotguns were used as an audible way to keep them away. I also remember that the weather in Miami turned grayish and depressing for about 3 weeks. I was at the site as described initially and returned for 1 extra night afterwards.
