But yeah, it's definitely the rhythm that through you off. It reminded me of the theme to "Zorba the Greek", which is probably the most known Greek song around the world, but the melody is definitely Jewish. Not that there isn't an influence there. Greek music is a fair blend of Middle-Eastern (especially Turkish) and even Indian music, and certain elements of Cuban music were added to the mix in the 1960s.
