I just see Sparks as a group that write really fun and catchy pop music and then putting funny clever lyrics to it. Their 80's work with Whomp That Sucker and Angst IN My Pants is really no different.
Change the lyrics to dumb lyrics about having fun or getting laid and the songs would still work as it would still be enjoyable to listen to even if it loses some uniqueness and identity.
To me calling Sparks a novelty act is simply calling any act that puts humour in it's lyrics to be a novelty act.
The only song I can think of that hits me as 'novelty music" is probably Biology 2 but outside that I'm struggling to see it.
Also I'm disappointed that I Married A Martian is only a footnote in your reviews. Come on it's their most thickly arranged song out of the two albums. Love the piano riff driving the songs and the vocal effects and some swirling keyboard noise and the lyrics are hilarious where the twist was the martian was just someone who became overweight during marriage.
