There were certainly other early alternative/underground bands making more experimental music at the time, but I've come to regard Let It Be/Tim/Pleased To Meet Me as the most consistent three album stretch of the genre, even if it's mostly straightforward "alternative" pop-rock (and they did show plenty of diversity within these genre confinements).
