I don't want to seem like a U2 classicist btw. I respect their evolution in the Achtung Baby era (I'm still kind of amazed by how steeped in irony the former most earnest band in the world allowed themselves to be. Zoo TV/PopMart were straight up ballsy satire.) In fact, I think AB is about 60-70% one of the greatest left-turns in pop history; I just don't think the execution (ie. songwriting) lives up to the conception the rest of the time.
