John, I think you really nailed it when you said that Macca's solo career illustrates that there's really not such a big gap between genius pop and mediocre pop. It makes me wonder if you or others experience the same thing I do when listening to solo Paul: that if I listen to too much of it at once, I start to lose the ability to clearly distinguish between great and mediocre. An album like Wildlife, for example, feels like a sort of invitation to enter a largely non-critical headspace—one in which you have some notion that, say, "Heart of the Country" is probably a better song then "Bip Bop", but you couldn't really put your finger on why, and you start to wonder if it really matters. I'd guess this is probably the same headspace in which Paul spent much of his post-Beatles years, and I tend to avoid his less-than-great work for fear of ending up in that same headspace.
