I used to rate Invisible Touch even with the lower rating than yourself and thought it was downright bad album.
I have to admit the album kind of grown on me.
I agree with most of your positive elements in your review and I think Tonight, Tonight is a really great song (although I'm not a huge fan of Dominos, I think pseudoprog Genesis in the pop era to be the weaker songs in the album)
However the two songs you criticised most Invisible Touch and In To Deep, I have to slightly defend it.
From a melodic point of view the verses of both of those songs does meet my criteria of good melodic writing in having a flowing melody line and there is a good build up with both of the song to the chorus.
The problem with both of the song is the chorus where it becomes a simple, primitive melody instead of something that should have been the climax highlight of the piece.
I think you acknowledge yourself that the melody of Invisible Touch verse is good but the chorus sucks which I do concur.
However if a song has a good well written verse but the chorus is underwritten. That's still a decent song. Majority of pop songs don't even have a well written verse or chorus. I still have to give it a thumbs up and call it a decent song.
I probably give Invisible Touch Hex 9 or 11/15
Maybe that this is probably my wife's favourite Genesis album (she's not a prog fan) may be giving me undue influence on me though :)
