*Like* is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. I moderately enjoy many of the songs on the album, it's true, but in every case the enjoyment has significant qualifiers. Put another way, to the extent that I like the songs on there that I like, I have to put in a lot of work to cut through the aspects of the individual songs that I don't like. Generally speaking, it's a mistake to try and estimate my rating for an album by a simple binary list of "does John like this song" vs "does John not like this song" and then do a tally at the end. This is certainly one element of the assessment of course, but if an album with 11 tracks has 7 tracks that barely squeak into the "I like this" list and 4 tracks that are absolutely unredeemable and fall on the "I don't like this" list, that doesn't mean I'm going to give an album a 6/10 (10 * 7/11). It most likely means I'll give it something in the 4/10 or 5/10 range. |
