You've already heard his playing on some Kate Bush album tracks, but if you haven't already been acquainted with his own work, I strongly recommend Eberhard Weber. Outside of Jarrett, he's easily my favorite artist of the classic ECM roster. And if you liked what Jaco was doing on Hejira, well, imagine something similar with an electrified double bass. It ruuuuuuuules. The ideal first stop picks would be The Colours of Chloe. which gives you a taste of how Weber works with a band as well as his more "chamber jazz" tendencies. (Somebody has actually uploaded it to YouTube as of posting.) For band stuff, you should then go with the 2010 Colours compilation, which contains three albums by a mostly consistent quartet (different drummer on the first). As for the "chamber jazz" side, I most recommend The Following Morning, which sees him and pianist Rainer Bruninghaus working with a philharmonic for one of my favorite mood albums. Here's what I will give as a sampler. This is him and the Colours quartet on Norwegian television in 1976, performing two numbers from Yellow Fields. And this is the first track off The Following Morning. |
