I think the underwhelming commercial success of Wings’ London Town becomes all the more understandable when you consider the competition at the time of its release. For starters, the year was 1978; guess what album was blocking it from the #1 spot in the US. That’s right, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album. And there was simply no stopping that album at the time. Also, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, another mega-seller, had been released the year before and was still probably selling like hotcakes (the group wouldn’t release their follow-up album until 1979). Other major sellers at the time included Billy Joel’s The Stranger, Electric Light Orchestra’s Out of the Blue, Steely Dan’s Aja, Eric Clapton’s Slowhand, and Crosby Stills & Nash’s CSN. That’s some pretty tough competition London Town was up against, and all those albums are still more talked about today than that album.
