We might add and a healthy New Year, as our health.
Means more than any other thing.
Not much is known about Hill 488 in Vietnam and what took place.
The author states men only know the war that takes place in what they can see.
Yet citations of valor awarded later paint entirely different picture.
Having served 17 months in-country during two tours.
The first one in 1965 was cut short as my two year tour in Hawaii had come to an end.
Nonetheless it was enough time to almost getting killed-in-action.
In late 1966, I got orders to go back to Vietnam.
Because there was a shortage of non-commissioned officers (NCOs).
I was a Platoon Sergeant and for a time the Weapons Platoon Leader.
It was only on paper as most weapons were assigned to different platoons.
Most believe the daytime belong to us, the night belong to our enemy.
My infantry company commanding officer had other ideas.
We will work when they are active, meaning at night.
There was a lot of boredom and lack of sleep.
Our enemy chose the time to hit us not the other way around.
This gives me an insight to citations for valor.
Someone wrote that citation to reflect a great deal of honor.
Even if it does not meet what took place.

It must be forged, tested and used.
It must be passed down.
