In the afternoon 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines was helio lift at the Danang airfield.
What the book does not cover, 3rd Battalion 4th Marines was onboard the USS Vancouver (LPD-2), and we had to go in by 'mike boats'.
Because the river was to shallow for the ship.
I had been a member of Bravo Company 3rd Recon, that was in support of 3/4.
The infantry companies got the word to leave behind anyone under 6th months on their tour in K-Bay Hawaii.
Recon did not get the 'word', on the ship reaching Okinawa, the infantry companies were short of 'squad leaders'.
Seeing that I had been in the 'Weapons Platoon' of Lima/3/9 and Charlie/1/5, I found myself a member of India/3/4.
Which went to Vietnam on USS Vancouver, and we went to Hue Vietnam on a 'Mike boat'.
I was there about 4 months, when we were send back to the USA.
In late 1966, I got orders back to Vietnam, I got there in late October 1966, first I was in 1st FSR.
Till I got orders to report to Golf/2/1, in October of 1967, Golf and Hotel 2/1 beside Charlie and Delta 1/1.
With a company of 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines part of the SLF.
Were part of Operation Medina, the book only cover Charlie/1/1 that was ambush by the NVA.
So was Hotel/2/1, my platoon of Golf/2/1 had the point on a trail that Vietnamese had cut.
The vegetation on both sides of that trail was very thick, so we could not have flank security.
Our company commander told us to cut a path on our left side to a river that was located over a ridge.
The going was too slow, so our company commander told us to come back to the trail.
That is when the NVA hit Hotel/2/1, and the NVA were shooting motars where the told we would be located.
We broke down to 6 men teams to carry the wounded, than our dead.
