When 3/4 got orders to deploy to South Vietnam, the infantry companies were told to leave anyone under 6 months left on their tour in Hawaii. Well my Recon company failed to get that word.
We left by ship, on arriving on Okinawa, those infantry companies, saw they had a need for squad leaders. Seeing that I had served in the Weapons Platoon of Lima/3/9 in 1958 on Okinawa and the Weapons Platoon Charlie/1/5, the powers pulled me from Recon to India/3/4. When the time of my tour in Hawaii came due, I was returned back to the USA. late 1966, I got orders back to Vietnam for a 13 months tour.
During my service, I had met Jimmie Howard, 'Medal of Honor' for action on Hill 488 in South Vietnam in 1966. In 1999 I got to meet in person PFC Raymond 'Mike' Clausen Jr. 'Medal of Honor' for saving many infantry company Marines. Once Mike in an email wrote; 'what took place that day was an insanity'. My reply Mike once maybe, for over 11 times had to be something else.
Sad to say all those Marines have passed on...RIP Semper Fidelis, former Staff Sergeant Ricardo Jacques
