William Manchester stated in "Goodbye Darkness" that all those in the service in a theater of war. Semper Fidelis
Were shrouded by death and it was a matter of luck on who survived.
No matter what you did, it still came down to luck.
From a personal point of view, I believe that he was right on the money.
Many suffer "survivor guilt" but there nothing to fear because it was just their luck that death did not shroud them.
This might be of some comfort to those now fighting in Iraq.
