Most are now in this shape and they're the subject of this month blog.
How we view them in a "lookist's society.
Lookist
My subject for this month--Lookist
lookist (adj) is unfairly deciding to like or not like someone by considering only the way they look, their weight, their clothes etc'.
The –ism is lookism, and the person who discriminates is a lookist.
Exceprts from various pages on the web.
Why are more American girls falling prey to depression, eating disorders, addictions, and suicide attempts more than ever before?
Teenage girls live in a junk culture filled with inducements to consume, to be sexual, to be lookiest and self-absorbed. They are pelted with media much worse than anything my generation experienced as girls.
Lookism is evaluating others solely on the basis of one dimension--appearance. Like other 'isms' such as racism, it's a way of simplifying that can lead to stereotyping.
One way to help is to praise girls for their talents, accomplishments and character, not their appearance. Another way to help is to be
non-lookist oneself. Another way is to limit exposure to lookist media and to process carefully all media the family consumes.
Margaret Mead defined an ideal culture as one in which there is a place for every human gift.
Fat is bad; thinness will bring you happiness.
A 1987 US study revealed that one generation earlier, the average female model weighed 8% less than the average US woman. By 1987, she
weighed 23% less. This increases the pressure on women to spend more time and money, and undergo more physical and psychological stress, to
try to reach the ideal.
Anorexia nervosa is thought to affect 1-5% of women. Bulimia affects a similar number of women, but may affect as many as one in six tertiary
students. More than 90% of cases are adolescent girls or young women.
Rise in Obesity & Body Fat
Also, the growing number of body-conscious men means fat is no longer just a feminist issue - it affects everyone, such as the parents of those boys who now account for 20% of adolescents suffering eating disorders. Furthermore, despite our preoccupation with weight-loss, the population has actually grown fatter. Much fatter.
From this last part we see its also an issue for young boys.
Some of those young boys will become young to middle age men with a weight problem.
Have we become a "lookist's society"?
What that I'll close this month blog
