We had a pleasantly cool early week. It was still summery, up in the 80's, but better than before. Then, on Thursday, 1 week after the cooling trend began, it warmed up to 100, and by Friday, when the wind changed and blew some of the smoke away, it was back over 110 for a couple of hours.
I don't love that kind of heat, but if I was to choose between the kind of smoke that we've had, or the heat, I'll work with the heat.
A couple of updates:
We found our ant packets, and put them up near the Kitty Kampers, but outside of their reach. So far, so good. I'm relieved because ants may be small, but they can be a pain.
The tidepool that Dh makes for the salamanders every year hasn't been touched in a week. The bears could be doing what bears do, which is making rounds of several miles, so they could be back in a couple of weeks, but for now, it's holding well.
Remember the frozen, whole lemon that I thawed in a bowl of water? Well, I tried one without the water, and it was just fine for squeezing for lemonade! It did leave a little water as it thawed, so I put it in a very small, shallow bowl, just bigger than it was, to catch any water, and that was it!
I do wonder if lemons will become freezer burned/dry out with time, so I will leave a couple in there, un-bagged, to find out, but it would be easy enough to drop them into freezer bags if you are going to keep them more than 2-3 months. Otherwise, they will sit in the freezer just fine. At least in mine, which is a deep freeze, so someone may want to experiment in a refrigerator freezer. I don't currently have one, so I can't do it.
When Dh was getting his tests today, he met a man in a neck brace etc. The man had gotten a very powerful electric bike for getting from point A to point B. He is 73. He was going uphill in it, and accidentally touched the brake...he'd had it for only 2 days.
I'll bet that you can imagine what happened...he went over the handlebars. He broke his neck, shoulder, arm, and damaged his leg. Yikes.
I've been planning Dh's birthday, with Ds. He wants to bake his cake, and make him some flavored popcorns, including cheese. I usually make the cake, which for years has been the 'boiled icing' cake that my grandmother, mother, and his mother all made.
You make a yellow cake, poke holes in it with a fork (I use a Japanese chopstick.), then pour over the icing. You cook milk, sugar, butter, vanilla or lemon, etc.
Then, you set the bottom of the pot into a bowl of ice, and beat it until it becomes thicker, but not too thick, and pour it all over the cake, and cool completely.
I have ribbons, bows, and paper ready to go. I'm giving him a pair of tough gloves that go up the arm, so that he won't get caught by thorns of the blackberry bushes etc. anymore, and a book that he wanted, but I'm pretty sure that he's forgotten about.
If they have it at the local video store, we will rent a movie directed by Frances Ford Coppola which is based on the true story of car manufacturer.
So, I think that I've got it all planned out.
How was your week?
