You would never know it by looking at the city today, but Las Vegas was built atop wetlands and meadows. "Las Vegas" translates to "The Meadows" in Spanish. The city was named in 1829 when a group of Spanish explorers, led by Rafael Rivera, encountered the land while traveling from Mexico to California. Rivera discovered a shortcut along the route and named the valley "Las Vegas" after its spring-watered grasses. Today, there is little evidence of the meadows that gave Las Vegas its name.

In 1909 Abraham Lincoln became the first American President to be featured on a circulating coin when Theodore Roosevelt and the United States Treasury Department decided to celebrate his 100th birthday by redesigning the one-cent coin. The first of these Lincoln Cents were officially released on August 2, 1909 and replaced the Indian Head cent. It would be twenty-three more years before another President (George Washington) would join Lincoln on the face of America’s circulating coins, when the Washington quarter, debuted in 1932.
