The couple of cakes that my mom bought, before going to homemade, were from a regular old neighborhood bakery...a stand alone bakery that sold only cakes, and other desserts. It was really cute, smelled delicious!, and they would give me a treat when we went in, such as a cannoli or a cookie. That's one of the things that's cool about small, mom and pop businesses.
I've mentioned this before, but the one that I was old enough to remember, probably just before mom began making the birthday cakes, had a Cinderella-style carriage on top, and inside was a small bottle of perfume, which was probably toilet water! I must have been 4 or 5 only, because by the time that we moved, when I was 6, she was making the cakes.
Ooo, that sounds great, I love chocolate cake!
I'm glad that you were able to figure out their German chocolate cakes. I have to admit, they are pretty darned good!
Hopefully, you will get some great-grands sooner than later. It takes time to wait for the mom to go through pregnancy, then the baby to get old enough to be able to ask for cute cakes, after all!
