I've always loved hearing the chef part about your dad. He sounds like he was a great man.
And, your mom sounds like she was a lovely, nurturing person.
Sometimes just instilling something like that is enough, and even better than advise.
When I was thinking of my own parents with this question, I couldn't come up with much advice, per se, yet I learned a lot of important things from them.
As for your independent attitude, they did a great job, probably nurturing what was already part of your personality.
Those snacks all sound good to me!
Me, too. I always made a mess of oranges, and wished that my mother would never put one in my lunchbox back in grade school. People don't realize how critical your thumbs are to peeling them, especially when you aren't at home, so have no utensils. The loose skinned tangerines were a little easier, but we never took those to school. So, to heck with it, I vote for a brownie, or my favorite chips!
