We started at Ds's house, because he's not been available, to iron out the details such as which items he had, and items not associated with his menu that he needed.
Ddil sent us her list, and I'm happy to say that I'd thought of a good portion of it already! :-)
He needed to get it all done in 1 day, as he's working each day this week now.
So, I made an 'out of town' list for 2 stores, and one for Safeway here in town, for each of us, and sent it to him.
He first called me at 8, but couldn't start until 11, after doing something for the boss.
Then, 'we' (lol!) headed to Ukiah first, and the food co-op. We don't get the bulk of our food there, but we are members again, so get discounts, and if things go well, rebates once a year. Besides which, like my market here, they are the place to find foods which are gluten-free, and a lot of other misc. items, especially for Ds, who gets baby items there, bulk hand soap, laundry detergent, his sauces, pastas, and any spices and other such items.
And, just before he left, he found a treat for me...2 beautiful papayas! I can't wait to eat them!
He was kind of long there, because of the items, but also the lunch crowd, making orders, etc. Next stop, Raley's.
The list for there wasn't all that long, but as we started filling the cart (Yes, it worked like a charm with me reading off items as he shopped! Yeah!) items from the Safeway list started showing up on sale! Naturally, we didn't want to leave them, only to go to Safeway and pay more.
That meant that quite a few items from their potato chips (1/2 off.) to some frozen items, were gotten. I did learn that I need to not read the list from my sent file, but use one in a regular file, so that I can do what he would normally do, which is to delete as we go.
So, with extra items, and Ds having to look through them, we weren't done there until evening. Ddil called, and said that he had to be home by 6 to pay a time sensitive bill, because he had her car, so she couldn't.
We had already planned on him stopping here when he got back in town, because we've switched from getting chicken at Safeway to getting it at Raley's. You can't leave chicken in the car, so we were going to put everyone's chicken in my 'fridge while he went to Safeway.
But, with the bill he needed to pay, he stopped, dropped all of out out-of-town groceries, and took his home, paid the bill, and had a frozen burrito, then went back to town to finish.
Once there, he went to first grab the cases and bulky items, which is a strategy that really works. However, the pre-ordered cases were not there. Note to self, call and bug them...I mean check, ahem...before shopping day, just in case. It should be there today...I hope that Ds gets back from work in time to pick them up. His cases at Raley's btw, were there waiting for him.
Things were going pretty well at Safeway...my reading it, and him having told me which aisles what were on, made things tons faster...but, as we got to produce, things started to go downhill. A lot of items only had a couple, if any, and a couple of items, like our celery, just didn't look great. My list is never as long as Ds's, by a long shot, but it's produce heavy, so that wasn't great for me.
We got what we could, and have no choice but for him to find a time to go to the small, local market, and get all of the vegetables/fruit that we weren't able to, and about 3 other types of items that the co-op was out of for them.
Still, I'm happy about what we accomplished. We got on the phone in the morning, as I said, and he didn't leave here after dropping off the Safeway items quite late. It wasn't all shopping, of course...he did go home, there was an hour of drive time over the grade, and he did stopped to eat once, which didn't take long, but it still wasn't shopping time. The rest was planning, unloading groceries here 2 x's, etc. Oh, and he took his old desk for his new office area. He had only picked up the chair previously.
I somehow was thinking that I could use the amount that I spend on these forays to let me see how well I've budgeted each month, but suddenly realized that I didn't shop at all in March, so that means all new calculations!
I'm glad that you have figured yours out, too.
That's a shame about your weather.
