You should check your freezers for these products (listed below.) and, imho, not eat chicken out unless it's freshly cooked from a raw chicken.
Another thing that prompted me to post, is that you don't have to have eaten it recently. If you develop any of the symptoms below, up to 2 months or so after having eaten one of the products listed, or generic chicken while out, you should contact your doctor.
This is the same recall that is possibly affecting at least one pet food currently. (The one that I posted the other day on PP.)
Tyson Chicken is recalling nearly 9 million pounds of various chicken products (some are listed below, and, as you can see, they don't all say Tyson as their main name.)
They were shipped nationwide to stores, hospitals, nursing facilities, restaurants, dept. of defense locations, etc.
The contamination would be listeria. There have been 3 illnesses, including 1 death.
Of Listeria they say:
Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns.
Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected. Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems.
Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.
FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumer and institutional freezers. Consumers should not eat these products. Institutions should not serve these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
