All I do remember are his wooden boxes with a heavy plastic on the inside. Raised to waist level on a table. His dirt was a dark rich soil and all in the basement. Moisture was provided but in a mist form I think and sunlight was indirect via small basement windows.
Any garden I have here will be planted in hay bales. I live atop limestone hills, no dirt. Just sand.
I make my own compost. I toss in washed egg shells, coffee grounds, tea leaves, along with raw veggies discards, etc. As well as bits of last years herbs.
I put back in to my compost the dead herbs and soil from their pots. That way I don't have to buy potting soil. My potted herbs the last few years did well in it.
