No matter where or what they are burning, the fires create terrible air quality.
I know a little about portobellos, are those the ones that you mean, or buttons? The basics, as I know them are:
You need compost, peat moss, and spores. (there are mushroom growing kits, I believe.)
I'm pretty sure that you can't grow them outside, because they require specific temperatures, such as not above 70 and not below 50.
Indoors is how more people grow them, but you still need temps around 60-70.
You need to sterilize the compost for a couple of weeks, unless the kits are ready to use, then you need to keep everything damp with misting for a couple of more. Then, you just have to babysit them until they are to the size that you want.
That's about all that I know about them.
