The first time that I had them toasted, my grandfather made it for me...it was in their old house, so I had to be 6 or younger. Delicious!
Then, when we lived in our last house in L.A., which we did for nearly 10 years, the people across the street used to toast bagels. I think that they were making them with omelets or scrambled eggs and onions. Either way, for some reason the scent made it over to our house very strongly, and it used to drive me crazy; I craved them all the time there because of that, lol!
Actually, that's the first time that I tasted caviar. When I had that first toasted bagel from my grandfather, he served it with cream cheese and caviar.
They didn't have a lot of $'s, it was just a jar of black lumpfish caviar from the store. He always wanted me to try new things. I've never looked back! :-)
