De Beers launched its iconic tagline "A Diamond is Forever" in 1947. At the time, De Beers was looking for a campaign that would help boost the sales of diamonds which had fallen off during the Great Depression. The successful tagline solidified the gem's reputation as a symbol of love and commitment, and ended up creating a demand for diamonds by convincing people that no marriage was complete without a diamond ring. The phrase has been part of popular culture for decades. In 2000, Ad Age named “A Diamond Is Forever” as the best advertising slogan of the 20th century.

Brian May is best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Queen. May was an astrophysics student when he helped to form Queen in 1970, but dropped his doctorate as the rock band became successful. May ultimately finished his degree in astrophysics nearly three decades after putting academia on hold. He earned his PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007, and served as a team collaborator with NASA's New Horizons Pluto mission. Brian May is ranked No. 26 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."
