Answer: In 2004 the Arbor Day Foundation held a vote to determine the official National Tree of the United States of America. The oak tree was the clear winner with more than 101,000 votes in the contest. The redwood came in second place with almost 81,000 votes. Dogwood, maple, and the pine tree rounded out the top five. Later that year, Congress passed legislation designating the oak as America's National Tree, touting its infamous strength and endurance. Advocates of the oak praised its diversity, with more than 60 species growing in the United States alone.
