I kept a chart in my classroom that projected the success of children based on minutes read a day. And I always encouraged parents to read at home or told them that reading and studying spelling were the only homework I gave. Did you know they are even phasing spelling out? There are things I would never give up about teaching....reading, spelling and multiplication needs to drill until it's automatic to know 3x4, etc.
