We had a pretty hot week. It started out in the 80's, moved to the 90's, then got over 100. On Thursday it was very cloudy, which plunged the temperatures to 70's - low 80's, and by yesterday it was 60's to mid-70's. The nights have been comfortable to warm.
Supposedly, we have a 70% chance of rain today, which should only give us 1/10". Then, no rain through the next week that I can see. But, this weekend the nights are supposed to get into the 30's again. Sheesh!
This was a nature bonanza week here.
We had what looked like miniature yellow jackets flying into the house. Under magnification, they appear to be small wasps colored like yellow jackets, but not exactly shaped right.
Dh saved one of our blue-tailed skinks. We took a couple of photos, then put him in a safe place.
The mosquito hawks are out now. And, these are large ones. I know that Gwen has mentioned that she has them there, too.
We've been able to listen to crickets chirruping, which can be soothing, I think.
And then, there were my hummingbirds!
The day after we hung the feeder, we began getting hits from at least 2 hummingbirds. I suspect that one is a female Rufous or Allen's, and I don't yet know what type the other one is.
They start eating early in the morning, and I see them at the feeder until it's almost too late to actually see them!
Currently, they are coming around approximately every 15 minutes, but rarely cross paths. We nearly always see only one at a time so far.
We got an okay photo of one through the window.
Ds was at work, and got a photo of a fox by an old building, then noticed that there were 2, which show in the photo. But, what doesn't show is that one of them had 2 babies, which were hiding under her. They came out after the photo was taken.
I finally got my DVR problem resolved. Whew! And, just in the nick of time. In just a few days, we would have been charged for the old one which needed to be sent back. They give you 10 days to return it. That charge would have been nearly $400.!! That shouldn't be allowed, but it is.
Even though, in the end, it was the company who did not 'turn on' the new receiver, which must be done in their office. They said that they had, and argued the point, but they had not, and eventually we found someone who saw that they had not, and turned it on for us. We were then free to send the old receiver back. Very frustrating.
Now, I'm keeping busy finding the shows that we like, and setting them to automatically tape. Some are only on for a few weeks every so many months, so I am keeping my eyes open for them.
If you get the History channel, there is going to be a special on Teddy Roosevelt on Memorial Day. Here, it's at something like 5 P.M., but you should check your local listing.
I got my dump trailer back today...hooray! We are planning to divide it and put trash in one side, and recyclables in the other. We are also going to tarp the top to keep the crows and ravens out of it, as they seem to delight in poking holes in bags, and pulling things out!
Oh, I almost forgot, we heard a sound and looked, and it was some herons flying by. We have them here, but seeing/hearing them fly over isn't that usual.
Early in the morning, on Monday, while we were trying to deal with our DVR problem, Uhura scratched to come in the door. She was pretty insistent, but Dh was on the phone with the tech, and I was manning the controls and following fast directions, so we left her there until we were done.
Apparently, she was upset, and when we were done, I saw her walking down the road on the camera, looking - in human terms - kind of dejected, until she was out of sight. Since she comes from wherever she is, which is normally just at the old house, when called, I asked Dh to call her.
He did, and all of a sudden a black streak came flying up the road in this direction. I've never seen a cat run that fast! She was back up here in no time looking as happy as if it was kitty Christmas!
Well, that's about all from this neck of the woods, how was your week?
