When my grandmother moved in 1967, her new place had both a tub, and a walk-in shower. The shower was great, and she was able to safely use it until she was 85. I'm sure that she could have used it for the rest of her life, had she not gotten a broken pelvis and hip in a car accident, then moved in with my parents.
