I adopted the 'eves' after getting married. I looked at it this way...
For Christmas Eve I wanted something simple, so I did, adding Christmas cookies that I'd baked to make it more special. You may be eating soup, but there are Christmas cookies for dessert, lol!
New Year's Eve became a bigger deal a while back. We used to listen to the radio countdown of songs, and at the same time, because Ds was younger and still at home, we played games while we listened. I got it in my head that I could make a variety of snacks, which we could eat through the evening and night, while we listened/played.
So, I could make tasty sandwiches, have cheese, dip, etc. and we basically did snack through the night. We could have popcorn, nuts, slices of salami with the cheese, crackers, and so forth.
We don't have anyone here anymore, so now it's an excuse to have something that we might eat anyway, but that I might not bother with all that often. Making pizzas, for example. We love them, but haven't gotten around to them as much as we'd like recently, so pizza has become a good contender for New Year's Eve dinner. Heck, if I could just order in a pizza, I would!
My mother didn't make meals for any of the 'eves' nor for New Year's Day. She stuck to Thanksgiving and Christmas, and making something that people having birthdays would like, if we didn't go out with my grandparents.
No, we didn't have Halloween meals growing up, either.
I just make a 'special' dinner for Halloween as an excuse to do something fun, though the meals are, again, a usual meal that we like. And usually just a meal not requiring side dishes. For example, chili spaghetti.
The only thing that has really 'stuck' for Halloween for the past 30 years, are my cupcakes. When the children were small, I started making either chocolate cupcakes with orange frosting, or vice versa. Those I usually still make. I like them, and never seem to make them at any other time. I have orange juice concentrate in the freezer, and want to try putting some in my frosting this year, and see how that tastes.
