Answer: The first-ever "ball drop" was held in Times Square in New York City on December 31, 1907, ushering in the year 1908. The Ball has been lowered every year since 1907, with the exceptions of 1942 and 1943 due to World War II and the need to conserve resources. During those years, the ceremony was suspended due to the "dimout" of New York City's lights which was also intended to protect the city from Axis bombing. Nevertheless, crowds still gathered in Times Square during those years, and the New Year's holiday was quietly rung in by a minute of silence.
