My Mother's mother's father had a plantation in Maryland. She had a "nursemaid" who moved with her once she was married. She & Pop-Pop were very wealthy until the CRASH when he lost everything like so many others. They lived in a home that was historic and raised 5 kids. but moved into a tiny apartment after that.
Her eldest brother - tall on that side of the family as well - used to pin me up against the wall and threaten to leave me there. I loved it. He married a French Canadian and they lived in Florida. He was one of those people who could play any instrument. Fascinating.
The middle uncle was in an explosion that marred his face and he was told by DRs to drink beer as a remedy to heal him. Never understood that but he ended up in AA. Had a serious problem. His son & daughter were younger then me.
Mother's youngest brother was hateful as was his wife. They would attack verbally my mother and I would be the only one as a child to stand up to him. Even then I knew my mother was weak. This happened before we moved to MI - so I was 6 & 7.
Took on my mother's role very early which is why my brothers called me Mom.
My mothers sister was the 2nd eldest and the reporter. She looked like Katherine Hepburn Honest! and acted in school plays. Took me to all the Westminster Dog Shows. Loved it.
Mother was the baby of the family and I think you can follow that rain of thought. Though she was sent into town to get her brothers home from the bar.
Oh Pop-pop had a bad leg due to a illness like Polio - never sure what illness but it was country wide- and he had a knee high booth that his foot fit into. WHen I stayed with them he let me see his short leg and helped him put his boot on.
Nana was physical. She golfed at Strawbridge Park Golf Course and Arnold Palmer was friends with her and I caddyied for her and My son brought me home the her putter. It is inthe front room and I use it as a cane - turn it upside down and the iron is a handle. I need to buy a rubber tip for the bottom. She was also an excellent water color artist - in my things in storage I have lots of her floral drawings and Pop-pops poetry.
Ok enough... I'll post about my other grandparents in the future. But good and bad memories.
