Answer: The Darth Vader Grotesque is a limestone grotesque located on the north side of the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. It is one of many grotesques that are part of the National Cathedral's rain control system. The grotesques deflect rainwater by bouncing it off the tops of their heads and away from the stone walls. During the construction of the northwest tower in the 1980s, 13-year-old Christopher Rader won a National Geographic World contest with his drawing of Darth Vader. The head was subsequently sculpted by Jay Hall Carpenter and carved by Patrick J. Plunkett.

March 14 marks Pi Day, an annual celebration of the mathematical sign pi. Founded in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, March 14 was selected because the numerical date (3.14) represents the first three digits of pi, and it also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday. The ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes is most commonly credited with being the first to accurately calculate the estimated value of Pi. Given that it is an irrational, transcendental number, it continues on to infinity. The first ten digits of pi are 3.141592654.
