Answer: George Washington was inaugurated as the first U.S. president on April 30, 1789, in New York City. The inaugural ceremony took place on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street. Robert Livingston, chancellor of New York, administered the presidential oath to George Washington in front of throngs of people congregated on the streets. The inauguration was held nearly two months after the start of Washington's first four-year term as president. Afterwards, Livingston shouted "Long live George Washington, President of the United States!" to the crowd, which was followed by a 13-gun salute.
