Meanwhile, it was a rather busy day here. Everyone and their mother drove out and in. Dh was walking Krypto just before we settled for our meal, when we heard a noisy car. Really noisy. Like, uncorked noisy. It was coming in. I watched on the camera screen, and Dh watched from the top of the hill. My camera had already gone black and white for the night, but he could see that it was a silver car that was not in good condition.
Whomever they were coming in to see couldn't have been pleased that they were drawing huge attention to themselves, I thought. I could hear the car all the way from the highway.
They went in, and not long later went back out...barely. I thought the car would break down. But, we stopped hearing it abruptly, as if they stopped at my next neighbors house. Then, they came back in...turned around and went out, but turned onto my access road instead, turning off their headlights.
So, we called the sheriff immediately. I didn't get a call back, so wondered if any were available. Then, the silver car left. Not long after, cars came in. Sheriff's cars...4 of them! That's really unusual.
They went in a little way, 2 stayed by the access road, and one called me. Unfortunately, and I'm sure that he didn't realize it, there's little to no cell service here, depending on day and carrier. So, while I was trying to talk to him/answer his questions, he was breaking up, then we got cut off.
2 decided to turn around up here, and one spoke with Dh, who explained that the people were gone, etc.
The other 2 went to the access road and walked down it, guns drawn - yikes. One with his service revolver, the other with a shotgun.
They didn't stay long enough to get into the new lock at the shop, so they let us know that it was simple trespassing. Had they been in the shop, or gone back to the house, it would have been different.
Today, when Ds gets ddil's car to come over - ddil has errands, including dropping the kittens off at the HS, he will review the disk on the game camera. (Ds's truck has a problem as of yesterday, so he has to use their car.)
My other cameras run all the time, and the footage is on it's DVR. We don't have a camera down the access road, so after the last problem we put one of the game cams there. Hopefully, they stopped to look at the shop, so that we got a good photo of whomever it was.
Anyway, it was disappointing to get the officers out here for nothing. And, also not to get whomever it was caught!
Do I think that it was the guys from before? Perhaps. Or, someone they spoke with. I don't think that it's unrelated.
The delay of speaking with the police made it get late, and with one thing and another we were up far too late. And, every time we saw or heard something, we checked.
The dogs were stressed, too. Well, Krypto was, anyway. He hated the car from the beginning, and when they turned down the access road he was pretty radical at the window. It took a little while for him to completely relax.
He picks up on our stress, and reacts to it, besides knowing when things that shouldn't be are going on. So, if my voice isn't 100% relaxed when I call Dh on the walkie, he knows that something is wrong, and looks for the cause of it. He will then blame whomever he thinks is causing the problem.
That's actually a very common problem that a lot of people don't recognize when their dogs fight with other dogs, etc. A root cause is often their person reacting to something, or anticipating something fearfully (like a fight...catch 22.) and them seeing the neighbors dog right then, etc. They blame the neighbor's dog, and attack him. They think that they are protecting their pack, which is why I have always kept Krypto from taking that roll.
We make it clear that it's not his job, that we are the pack leaders, but he still reacts to our stress levels, like most dogs, and in a tense situation, like a break-in, I can't guarantee that he wouldn't see the stranger as the cause (which they would be.) of the problem.
So, I don't even want to go there with him, but don't have the people and opportunities, as I did in L.A., to train for that. I used to have endless people whom the dogs that I was training didn't know, in order to teach them how I wanted them to react.
Anyway, that was how my night unfolded.
But, I will say one thing...I think that I know why they left prematurely.
I had the two new outdoor lights. I set one to shine on the front door of the old house. I considered putting one at the back door, but decided to put it next to the shop....
I'm wondering if they went to sneak around in the dark, thus they turned their headlights off, but the light came on! Muahahaha! At the very least, it will have made any photos come out better!
Well, that's my night, and now I need to start my day, and hope that there's a nap for me sometime today! I've got to deal with Ds and the disk, get the birds out before it gets so hot that the humans feel sick standing out in the sun, cook a little food for dinner while it's cool, and so forth.
Thank you, Momo - take that, thieves!
