I've been surprised by people taking sides on the 4th of July holiday. Some people love it, but others are quite grumpy about it.
How do you feel about it, and has that changed, say from when you were a child, to having your own children, to now?
My core family didn't do anything for the 4th, so I have no real memories of it at home. However, when we went to my grandparents' house, we had fun food and made ice cream. Then, my grandfather gave we children - all of their grandchildren, a fireworks show.
I thought that it was really something that we were allowed to have a sparkler, which we lit on the gas stove, then carried carefully outside. That shows you how sheltered from that type of thing that I was!
And, if we happened to be at my grandparents' house, we did see lots of family - aunts and uncles, plus cousins.
As an adult with children, I made fun food, also. I still love pretty desserts on the 4th, grilled food, and some red, white, and blue pinwheels! Oh yes, and we used to get cotton candy from the little fair in town. I had it once a year, and looked forward to it.
And, as you know, we also have a parade, rodeo, etc. here each year. And, previous to the drought, there was the fireman water fight.
How about you?
